Internship
Benefits to the Employer
As a sponsor of student interns, an employer looks
forward to highly motivated pre-professionals, who are actively
pursuing academic training in business. Internships give employers
a special staff for short-term projects or long-term on-going operations,
with the opportunity of flexible scheduling. It is expected that
student interns will be ambitious, highly motivated, hard-working
individuals who will bring fresh ideas and enthusiasm to the company.
Business internships give employers a flexible, cost-effective work
force not requiring a long term commitment, and freeing permanent
professional staff for alternative work. Employers receive a chance
to preview the performance of strong candidates for future employment
in a variety of job settings.
Benefits to Montgomery College and the Macklin
Business Institute
By taking part in internship programs, employers
assist universities and colleges by providing linkages to the business
community-- contact that is important if academic institutions are
to respond to the needs of business. This link between the classroom
and the boardroom enables the program to formally integrate academic
studies with work experience in a variety of business fields. Strengthening
this link can enhance both the college and the company profile.
In return, employers are asked to monitor, guide, and supervise
their student interns, in order to utilize their career-related
skills and promoting professional development.
Student Benefits
Internships offer many benefits to students. Internships
offer career exploration opportunities in a variety of fields and
provide a hands on experience. Students who complete internships
are often more marketable to employers. A student intern also has
the opportunity to develop good references and to network. These
work experiences are closely monitored by college supervisors who
consult with on-site supervisors. Students will acquire experience
and skills that will enhance their personal growth and development
and at the same time legitimize the theoretical classroom learning.
They will bring information back to the classroom and provide feedback
in real world terms. Educational costs incurred by the student may
also be partially offset since employers pay competitive salaries
to the students for the work they perform. Students may even continue
to participate as an intern with the company throughout their college
careers.
