More than 70 family members, friends, colleagues, community leaders, STEM students, and Montgomery College supporters gathered at the Germantown Campus on April 16 to celebrate the legacy of Dr. Hercules Pinkney and the values that have shaped his commitment to education and service.
The Montgomery College Foundation hosted the luncheon to honor Dr. Pinkney and his family and to celebrate the success of the Eartha B. Pinkney and Hercules Pinkney Sr. Scholarship Fund. Inspired by their parents' example, Dr. Pinkney and his siblings contributed $25,000 and challenged family members and friends to match their gift. The more than $50,000 in gifts raised will create immediate scholarship support for Montgomery College students and will establish an endowed fund providing assistance for years to come.
The gathering highlighted the family's deep conviction that education can transform lives. Family members shared stories about Eartha and Hercules Pinkney Sr., whose determination, sacrifice, and dedication to learning influenced generations of their family.
In a particularly moving story, Dr. Pinkney recalled when his mother returned to high school after raising her children—and attended classes with some of them. She later enrolled in college with one of her daughters. Her determination reflected the family's belief that education can create opportunities at every stage of life.
Those same values—perseverance, lifelong learning, and a commitment to expanding opportunity—shaped Dr. Pinkney's own career and leadership philosophy. Former colleagues and friends reflected on his impact on Montgomery College, Montgomery County, and the state of Maryland. During his tenure as vice president and provost, interim president, and later president emeritus, he championed innovation, collaboration, and student success.
Before and after the luncheon, guests toured the Pinkney Innovation Complex for Science and Technology (PIC MC), where they saw Dr. Pinkney's vision in action. The tour showcased the connections among education, healthcare, research, entrepreneurship, and industry that define the complex. It also illustrated how the Pinkney Innovation Center (PIC MC) creates pathways for students pursuing careers in biotechnology, healthcare, advanced manufacturing, and other high-demand fields.
By bringing students, employers, researchers, and entrepreneurs together, the complex serves as a model for workforce development and innovation. While the tour highlighted the scope of Dr. Pinkney's vision, speakers throughout the event focused on another defining characteristic of his leadership—humility. Despite helping create one of Montgomery College's most ambitious initiatives, he has consistently directed attention to the students, colleagues, and community partners who make the work possible.
The Pinkney family's philanthropy also reflects their investment in creating opportunities for others. The scholarship fund established in honor of Eartha B. Pinkney and Hercules Pinkney Sr. transforms the family's values into lasting support for Montgomery College students. By helping students pursue their educational goals, the fund ensures the legacy of generosity and confidence in the power of education that shaped the Pinkney family will continue to influence future generations.
